My Ordinary Miracles Coming Soon!

Big News Post! ;-)

When I first wrote my memoir, I researched agents that not only accepted memoirs but ones who would also accept the genre health and other topics I wanted to write. Then, I anxiously awaited for answers to my query from hopeful agents who wanted to take on my project. And then I queried a few more and waited some more.  I even seeked out those in the industry who may understand more deeply the need for stories like mine and still I didn’t get any response back that led anywhere. Some of the 40ish agents said my project wasn’t for them and most didn’t respond at all. And when I dove a little deeper, I found out that the most recent infertility memoirs out there are almost all self published!

And while at first I didn’t think I was going to go that route, I now realize that it’s a perfect solution! Not only are nearly all new authors over-looked in this tough economical era we are in because publishing houses simply don’t want to take the risk and can’t afford it….but it seems that infertility is still so taboo and many just don’t want to touch the subject at all. And since rights, royalties and turn around time is so much better when you self-publish, I decided to go for it!

So, in about 3-4 months, my memoir, My Ordinary Miracles will be available to buy! I am nervously excited but wanted you all to be the first to know (well besides Tw.itter.ville)! I will keep you all posted! Thank you so much for all your support. :-)  I can barely believe it’s happening!

Oh and if your curious about the inspiration for the title…scroll down my sidebar to my playlist and play #11!

The Disease We Need To Start Talking About

ignored-campaign-image  I wanted to link to another great article written in the Huffington Post, similar to the Self’ article I linked to last week. The more articles written and books published, and the more we speak up,  the more everyone will start rallying for our cause….

Another thing we can do, as Resolve suggests, is to comment on BOTH these articles (this one and the Self one linked above) thanking them and telling them what you think! You can also take the pledge to help raise awareness!

Too Crowded?

IF booksSo I recently got an e-mailed response from an agent that said my idea was interesting but they’ve recently discovered that it’s “too crowded to pursue at this time.” So I e-mailed her back asking if it was just memoirs in general or infertility memoirs. She replied back that she meant books dealing with infertility. And, I have to say that I’m shocked! Too crowded? Infertility books? Really? I mean I know there have been a few new books published on the scene and I’m guessing this agent (being on the inside track) knows better than me but it just doesn’t seem possible. Don’t get me wrong, I think it would be absolutely wonderful if the market was indeed “crowded.” But I just don’t think we are there yet…

What do you all think?

‘Breaking the Silence”

ribbonA I await answers from agents I’ve queried about my memoir and continue to get the same response of “not for me,” I get increasingly frustrated at the stigma attached to infertility.  Why is it that we have memoirs for cancer survivors, pink ribbons, go RED campaigns for heart disease, walk-a-thons, tel-a-thons and huge national fundraisers for various other causes out there but no body wants to talk about infertility or raise money or awareness?

Even though I’m not in the thick of my struggle anymore, my infertility is not behind me. I’m still trying to make time to advocate for this disease. And that’s why I will continue to strive to get my story out there to help others going through it and to work on other book ideas in the health genre focused on infertility. Of course, that’s also the reason I write this blog. I’m trying to prove that just because I may have been successful with my battle, there is still a fight to be fought. I am trying to break the silence and change the stigma.

I’m linking to an article I stumbled on recently. And even though much of the information isn’t eye-opening for many of us infertiles, it brings a smile to my face that a major magazine like Self even published this at all. It’s about ‘breaking the silence’ from the waiting room all the way to Congress and it’s worth the read!

So Close ~ A Review

51GMdlLp16L__SL500_AA300_So, I recently had the pleasure of reading So Close by Tertia Albertyn. And, I have to say that it was a gripping novel, an infertility memoir that will stay with me for some time to come.

The cover has a tagline of “Infertile and addicted to hope.” And I think that’s what has resonated with me the most. The hope. The sheer will that Tertia had to do whatever it took to finally have a child. She never gave up because she decided that it would never be an option until she had what she yearned for most.

She certainly went to hell and back througth her infertility battle! If you can imagine the worst happening, it happened to Tertia. She went through 3 IUIs, 10 IVFs (9 of which are written about in the book), had negative cycles, was canceled from poor response, had miscarraiges, an ectopic pregnancy, and even the very worst, an infant loss with her first born son Ben. And as frustrating as it was to read and empathize, I can only imagine how devastating and frustrating it was to experience. I give Tertia a LOT of credit! She has perhaps the most perseverance out of anyone else I have ever read about experiencing infertility.

One review on the back cover reads, “So Close is the heart wrenching, exhilirating, devastatingly funny story…” And  it was definitely heart wrenching…especially the part when Tertia describes in detail how she layed in the hospital, resting her hand on her belly with one twin dead and the other waiting to be born. I cried reading that. I also cried when I read about Ben’s birth because although she never wrote a single word about it, Luke, Ben’s twin who had died a month earlier in utero, was also born that day, still born.

tertiaAnd truth be told, I didn’t really find it “devastatingly funny.” It was sad, really sad. But I knew it was going to be a happy ending, so I couldn’t pull myself away. (In fact, it was really hard to put the book down.) Tertia has a wit about her that did make me laugh at times though. And for that, I was grateful.

The book wraps up at the birth of her twins Adam and Kate. They are now has 6 year old! And after 2 surprise pregnancies that ended in miscarraige and a negative FET (her 10th IVF), she now has a 20 month old, Max who she had (BIG Surprise) naturally

The book is so appropriately titled So Close because she did come so close so many times and finally acheived happiness. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry. You’ll be inspired and empathize with her pain. She is a rock!

Go check out So Close. It is truly a wonderful memoir of hope! You can aslo follow Tertia’s journey at her blog.
