Grinning & Baring it

It’s a part of life. Children are born, they are Christened and they have birthdays. And it’s bound to happen that at some point, you will be invited to one. And while you wish you were the proud mom, (and perhaps you’re screaming inside because you’re not), you probably wouldn’t be invited if you weren’t important to the mom in one way or another.

So, the first hurdle is accepting the invitation. And whether it’s guilt or pride (or a little of both) that drives you, here are some tips that can help make the time less painful over all.

  1. Ask to go in on a gift with someone else or a group. Tell them you’ll chip in if they can pick it up. That way, you don’t have to look through a long registry of baby items or toys…unless of course you love buying for babies, even when it’s not yours!
  2. Make sure there will be someone there you know that you can talk to…get there early and scope them out. You will be glad to have a distraction and it will help to stay engaged. This can also help you avoid ignorant silly questions others may have. ;-)
  3. If you can emotionally handle paying attention to all the finest details of the event, you can clue into great ideas to keep in mind for your own events to come in the future. Sometimes it can be fun to see what you would and wouldn’t do.
  4. Remember, the event will be over in a few short hours. And, at the very least, your presence (and gift) will be remembered.

  1. … And that we’re there for our friend and that we’ve gotten to hopefully spend time with other friends.
